The Big “O” - Injectable Weight Loss Drugs
What to know!!!!
Things to consider before you jab.
Why some are standing in line while others are running for the hills!!!
I’m getting A LOT of questions regarding the now popular Ozempic and Monjauro injectable weight loss drugs. Is it a miracle drug? It’s been shown to be effective, but what about safety? I’m happy to let you know what I know so you can make your own informed choice or share with loved ones.
There are a few things you need to know first, so here is a quick look back on high school biology class:
1st Concept: Food + Air = Energy
The reason you eat food is to create energy (fuel) for the body to keep your cells alive. Your body will take the food you eat in the form of carbs or fats, and the air you breathe in the form of oxygen, metabolize it in the cell and create energy to fuel all necessary life-giving reactions in the body.
This is important:
When the body has carbs the cells prefer to burn them for fuel rather than fat.
This includes dietary or stored fat. So, you may have plenty of “stored energy” in the form of fat, but as long you eat carbs, your body will burn carbs rather than burning stored fat -
Total bummer… but true!
2nd Concept: Insulin is Driving the Carb-Bus
Having high levels of sugar in your blood is dangerous and can cause severe, even life-threatening conditions. When you eat, your blood begins to absorb its contents and blood sugar levels begin to rise. It makes sense then, that having a process to remove the increasing amount of sugar being absorbed is critical.
That job falls on a hormone called insulin! Insulin is released into your blood when food is detected in your mouth and stomach. Then, when glucose/carbs/sugar are detected in your blood, another hormone (incretin) that is made in your gut travels to your pancreas and tells it to make more insulin.
Insulin “buses” glucose out of the blood to inside the cell …therefore lowering the harmful effects of high blood sugar levels AND initiating metabolism.
In a nutshell, Concepts 1 and 2 summarize Metabolism :
The food you eat is absorbed into the blood, then transported inside the cell where it is turned into energy.
Remember:When the body has carbs the cells prefer to burn them for fuel rather than fat >>>>
How Does Ozempic Work?
I mentioned above that when food is detected in the belly and mouth, insulin is released into the blood (called Phase 1 insulin response). Then, when sugar is detected in the blood, another hormone called incretin is released from the gut to signal an increase in insulin production (called Phase 2 insulin response).
Ozempic and Monjauro imitate this gut hormone, incretin, and bypass both phases 1 and 2 insulin response causing a very HIGH production of insulin.
RESULTS:
Fat Burning Initiated: - high levels of insulin cause high levels of glucose to be removed from the blood stream leaving the body in need of an energy source … without carbs availabe the body will begin to burn FAT for fuel resulting in weight loss
Block glucose production: typically when levels of carbs drop, the liver will release stored sugar. Ozempic/Monjauro blocks this action further perpetuating the need to burn fat for fuel.
Decreased gastric motility: Gastric motility is the movement of food from your mouth, to your esophagus, to the stomach, through the intestines, then the colon, and finally out the other end to it’s final destination. Ozempic/Monjauro decrease the mobility, causing your food to sit in your gut longer (potentially rotting), giving you a feeling of ‘fullness’ …. resulting in eating less.
What’s the Downside Dr. Bean?
Injectable weight loss drugs are replacing normal gut function!
YIKES!
Imagine a wave of insulin crashing against the shores of your cells over and over and over. This wave initiated by Ozempic is just like the sea that crashes against the shore creating noticeable changes with time. Damaged insulin receptors change the body’s normal response to carbs.
Insulin Resistance: the body has natural checks and balances, positive and negative feedback loops to balance physiology. Bypassing natural insulin response to food causes deep rooted insulin resistance which means when someone stops taking Ozempic or Monjauro, the miracle has ended, they immediately lose all the benefits and GAIN the backlash of insulin resistance
Weight Gain and Fat Storage: insulin is a “fat-storing” hormone. It’s presence tells your body to convert carbs into fat and store it in your fat cells. With damaged insulin receptors insulin becomes inefficient at pulling glucose out of your blood resulting in high blood glucose, insulin resistance, and tremendous weight gain.
Ozempic Recovery Program & Weight Loss Strategy
If you are someone who either has taken injectable weight loss medication and/or wants to lose stubborn weight, you have options.
Increase metabolism
Re-sensitize insulin receptors
Decrease inflammation in the gut
Balance blood glucose
Reduce cardiovascular risk
Reverse pre-diabetes and diabetes
Improve memory and brain function
Any approach to weight loss should be personalized according to your current metabolic capacity and physiology.
